The History of Greenfield Park: 1910-1975 describes the transformation of a sparsely populated area in Quebec, across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal, to a typical modern Canadian small town.
Riley systematically sketches in the early land deals, the first roads and bridges, and the building of homes, schools, churches, and businesses by the prominent families in the town. The first sidewalks, nothing more than planks on mud, were laid down, later to be replaced with proper sidewalks. The most significant element in the development of the town, however, was the extension of the Montreal and Southern Counties Railway through the proposed community, which would enable the residents to commute to jobs in Montreal.
Many of the early residents are still alive and have stories to tell. Riley has interviewed a number of these residents of "The Park" and has preserved their memories in this unique history. Reading these accounts of childhood in small-town Canada gives us a poignant picture of a simpler, less cluttered existence.
